Davy Brown

Davy was born in Kilmarnock in 1950. From 1968-72 he studied contemporary painting at Glasgow School of Art, notably under James Robertson, David Donald and Duncan Shanks. In 1971 he held the first of many solo exhibitions at the Citizen's Theatre. He continued to develop his style while completing teacher training at Moray House College, Edinburgh from 1972-3. In 1975 the resultant work led to his winning a modern art scholarship at the Institute of Cultural Affairs, Chicago.

The scholarship gave him the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the North American subcontinent, Iceland and Europe. He combined his experiences during this period with a growing appreciation of the Modern British Abstractionist movement, notably the St Ives group including Terry Frost, John Wells and Wilhelmina Barns Graham. The work of James Robertson and his own inherent interest in environmental issues were significant other influences that ultimately produced his now instantly recognisable landscapes.

The parallels between Cornwall and Galloway could have escaped some. Davy saw them and painted them. His informed fusions capture the extraordinary interplay of ever-changing light and colour, and capture them with power and beauty. His paintings don't just make statements; they ask subtle, nuanced questions. They have an extra dimension, a stillness and calm, that draws in the viewer; that makes you question where they are and, often, want to be there.

He gave up teaching in Scottish schools in 2002 because he needed more time to satisfy the demands of his developing oeuvre and, happily, buyers and Galleries throughout the UK and the USA. His paintings hang in collections from Dumfries to York via Merseyside.
